The chrysanthemum (literally golden flower) is also known as the Saint Demetrius flower, as it blooms mainly in October. Young plants are planted in May and June, and are sold from August until early November.
Plants grow vegetatively when exposed to long days (≥ 14.5 hours) or nights of 9.5 hours. Flower buds start to differentiate when the day length falls below 13.5 hours or the night lasts 10.5 hours.
Pot sizes should be 2, 3, 4, or even 5 LT, and the plant diameter should be 1.5-2 times larger than the pot. It is also important to maintain proper spacing (for a 15 pot at least 30-38 cm, for a Ø20 pot at least 45-60 cm, etc.).
The substrate should ideally contain coarse peat with clay, or a peat mix with 15-20% clay soil.
The ideal cultivation temperature is 16°C at night and 22°C during the day. In Greece, however, summer temperatures are much higher. Plants should ideally be watered 2-3 times, up to 4-5 times per day, preferably using a drip irrigation system, and should not be deprived of water during the early stages of growth.
